Judging Information
Wonderville.ca Science Challenges are unique as student teams and judges “meet” online using the power of the SuperNet network in Alberta. This allows participation from regions in Alberta that would normally be limited by distance or access to resources.
Who can Judge?
Judges can come from all walks of life and all regions of the province. For those nervous about being a judge, don’t worry — Science Alberta Foundation will provide a “cheat sheet” with all the basic science that students are using for the challenges. This means that a science or engineering degree is not a prerequisite.
Here is a list of the criteria:
Alberta resident
Not a teacher with students registered in the challenge
Must be over the age of 18 years
Must be willing to commit to judging 5- 8 projects between April 12th and April 18th. A time commitment of 2-3 hours
Need to have access to a high speed internet connection
If you have any questions about being a judge please contact us and we will be happy to answer your questions.
Timeline
Students have had the month of March to design and build an Ultimate Thrill Ride (Grade 7) a Rube Goldberg Machine (Grade 8) or an asteroid harvester (/challenges/asteroid-harvester/). On April 9th, 2008 all student entries are due. These entries will be randomly assigned to judging teams on April 12th, 2008.
Judges have from April 12th, 200 to April 18th, 2008 to judge the projects. Judging can take place over a number of days or all at once. In total we expect that it will take between 2 to 3 hours to judge.
Judging Process
All judging will take place online:
Judging team will logon to the Science Challenges website using their access code
Judges will be able to see the list of teams that have been assigned to them. Each judge will be assigned between 5 to 8 projects to judge
By clicking on any one of the student team names will bring up the team information. Each student team has been asked to upload a:
a. picture of their ride/machine
b. short description of the ride/machine
c. diagram of the ride/machine
d. 1-2 minute video that explains what they have designed.
Judges will have a judging form to score each of the entries. Scoring will be done online, but judges will be able to download and print hard copies of the judging form.
Scores from across the province will be tabulated and a final round of judging will take place at Science Alberta Foundation on April 21st to choose the winners in each category.
Winners will be announced on April 25th, 2008.
